Virtual labs

[00:00:00] Right. Let's talk about virtual labs and how to use them on station X. Let's define what a virtual lab is. So a virtual lab is a sandbox interactive virtual environment for learning based on a simulation of some sort of real phenomenon or phenomenon. So virtual labs help you get practical exercises or practical experience.

Implementing security. So that's both offensive and defensive security. An example might be a virtual environment that allows you to attempt to hack a virtual server or client, or do some form of hacking. Another environment might allow you to look for indicators of compromise to analyze a particular attack.

There are roughly. Two ways of implementing virtual environment. So one let's call that a laptop labs. These are labs that you install on your own laptop or machine. You will download the lab Uh, from station X, you will get virtual [00:01:00] software from the internet that will be free. And the links to get those virtual labs will be in the courses you download and install the application and install the laptop.

So the benefits of laptop labs are that there are no additional cost to them. You can use them for as long as you wish to train over and over again, the downside of laptop labs is you have to download and install them. You've got to configure them yourself, and it takes a little bit of time to do that and work it out how to do it.

But I see that we see that as part of the learning process, part of learning practical skills. So that's the first type of lab, the laptop lab. Then the second type of labs that you can get, or cloud based labs or labs that run on servers on the internet. These are mostly quick to access and require little configuration.

These are more [00:02:00] costly than laptop labs and are often even charged for by the hour. So there is often some limitations. In how much the cloud-based virtual labs can be used station X. We mostly utilize the first option, the laptop based labs. As you go through the courses on our platform, the authors will teach you how to install any laptop based labs that are needed, where to down load them, how to install them, configure them, et cetera.

Although I'm calling them laptop based labs, they can actually be installed on any machine that you own. Sarah Mac, Linux, windows, windows, et cetera. It's a good practical exercise learning to install those laptop labs. We have many courses that feature laptop based labs and some courses that are entirely focused.
