What is a VPN

Download

Hey, everybody and welcome to the next video.

So in this video, we are going to be talking about VPN.

So what is a VPN?

A VPN stands for virtual private network.

Now, this type of network allows for secure data to be transmitted from one point to another.

So from, for example, your machine to a web server or from one office to another privately and safely route your connection.

What happens is, is you actually travel through another machine.

So you're using the connection off of another machine, this, in turn will hide the source IP address that you're originally coming from.

Now, this is important because this allow this is what allows some attackers to kind of bypass firewalls and stop.

Now, what we're going to go over here is why it's used which to explain a little bit already.

You can hide your actions from the original IP.

So your IP from your from your Internet service provider or ISP has given you a IP address that you have that it has on file for you.

Now, what you're doing is you're using you're going through another system that IP is the one actually making the calls that you're making.

That means the IP or the source IP that the Web services is not your original IP, but it's the VPN zipping.

Again, this secures one connection or one office to another.

Such as a remote office to HQ or remote office to remote office.

It's commonly used for for those type of things at the switch and I'm sorry, at the the router firewall level.

Again, this hides an attacker source.

Now depending on the VPN, it is easy for, the police or government agency to identify and grab the logs to know what the original source was, which is why most attackers will piggyback off of quite a few of them, some in places that they don't, that the U.S. does not have jurisdiction in this particular example.

Now, this also can bypass IP blocks.

So if you're on your regular machine, you do something stupid, you get blocked or you're doing an engagement and your password sprang out and then the company blocks your IP natural.

You're going to go out, hop on a VPN and you can now continue your engagement without having your IP blocked.

This is pretty common.

A lot of consulting companies will have their own IP or their own VPN that they will just use and consistently rotate IP addresses if one of their consultants gets blocks during an engagement.
