Installing PFSense

Hey, everybody, and welcome to the next module.

So in this module, we're going to be going over the firewall PFSense.

Now we're going to be going over how to install it, how to work with it, how to change configurations, how to handle VPN's, DMZ is firewall rules.

We're going to touch base on this quite a bit.

Now, this is going to be a hands on course.

So I want you to build this and install it as we go through in each video, but also understand that PFSense is not a high level firewall.

So you're not going to find it in Fortune 5000 companies.

You're going to find it in the realm of like 100 to maybe 300 employees or people who are using it at home.

It's a powerful firewall in that regard, but it's not meant to be running gigs and gigs and gigs of traffic through it all at the same time and keeping it supposed to be maintaining that.

So you're going to find it, it's much smaller companies.

Now link above brings us to this page with this option selected.

Now, what I want you to do is go into architecture, do AMD64 and then select CD Image ISO installer and then whatever mirror is closest to you.

Go and hit download and that's going to install or bring down a .gz.

So on Windows you can use WinRAR, which is free.

If not, go ahead and download it and that will open up this.

Linux and MAC users, you can either double click on it or if you are on the command line, use gunzip.

Now once you have the ISO, we're going to go ahead and click on New for a New VM rename it PFSense and we will change it to Linux and Other Linux 64-bit and we'll give it some memory and we will just create.

Perfect, then we'll click on settings, go to storage.

Give it a new hard disk or nope not new hard disk, new optical drive, choose disk, and we will give it our PFSense, ISO.

Perfect.

Perfect.

So and then make sure network is set to NAT so we can reach it on our machine and OK, then we'll go ahead and hit Start.

Now, this will start going through the installing process and the first prompt that comes up, we're going to leave it as complete default.

Don't press anything.

Just let it go through and then it will start booting up the installer for us.

OK, now that we put it up, we're going to go ahead and hit space or enter or enter for to accept these agreements and we'll do enter again for the install and enter again for default and enter again for that.

And then we'll go ahead and wait and I'll be right back once this is done installing.

OK, now let's go and install it.

We're going to go ahead and hit no for this because we don't actually need to work with it and we'll do reboot.

So as we can see here, we've loaded right back into the installer.

So what I want you to do.

Lets go and exit out and it's going to say Send Power off.

You are going to power off the machine.

Perfect.

Click on PFSense, settings, storage.

We're going to do is we're going to go ahead and click on our storage device, so we added and we're going go and remove it like OK, and start the machine back up.

This way, it won't boot into the installer any longer.

It'll boot straight to PFSense.

Perfect.

Now, we're here, what we're going to do is we're going to set up a few default things, we're just going to put some things in place.

So this is would you like to set up violence or in this case, we're going to type n and hit enter.

We don't want to set any up enter the name of the WAN interface.

So we're going to it says em0 or a.

So we're not going to use a we're just going to use em0 or whatever option it provided to you.

And then hit enter and then it says enter LAN interface name or 'a' for auto correct.

So in this case I'm just going to not click anything, I'm just going to hit enter.

And then, Do you want to proceed.

Yes.

So we'll go ahead and let that finish.

Perfect.

So, once we're here, we're going to hit 8 for shell.

Now we're going to do ifconfig pipe that into less, so you can actually see what's going on.

OK, everybody, so there's one thing that that I goofed up on, so if we can see here at if we go back to PFSense, then we hit settings, then network, we need to change this from NAT to Bridged.

So what you can do, even though this is running, it's what I want you to do is go and close this, just set power off the machine.

Then we got settings, it's fine.

Then you're going to go into settings, network, change it from NAT to Bridged, and when you do this, leave it whatever the default is, that's going to be your base network card that you're going to be using, whether it's wireless or Internet based on.

Then we will hit OK, and go ahead and start the back up again.

And once all of that's done, it's just going to pop us up back to the same thing, but what it did was it changed it from an IP address on the local network inside of VMware.

It provided us an IP address on our actual network where our physical machine were running this is actually sitting.

So I'll be right back with you guys, once this finishes loading.

OK, now then we've loaded up, we will do Shell again.

Ifconfig pipe that into less and then we'll see at the top we see in inet, right here.

So, inet in my case is 1921681.12.

So yours is going to be whatever is going to be slightly different.

So go up to your browser, do https 92.168.12, I believe it was 1.12, yeah.

Perfect, in my case, it's not secure, so I had advanced an exception.

In your case, you might have to do something similar, but this is what happens with Firefox.

So go and add the exception.

Perfect.

So now when you get here, the default is admin and the password is PFSense.

So that's going to get to our initial installer.

So what we're going to do here is we're going to click next.

And next, we're perfectly fine there.

So in this case, we're going to give it something, so we are going to do pfsense0, pfsense01, perfect.

That's completely fine local domain is fine DNS server, we're going to leave empty for now because we don't need it.

We're not going to need it in this particular video.

And next and time server, we're going to leave completely.

If I can change the time zone or whatever you want, I'm leaving a default.

And next.

OK, so we will leave that as actually, we're going to keep it on DHCP.

We're not going to play around with this at the moment.

So we will go ahead and hit next.

Then the admin password.

So this is where you change the pfsense part to whatever you want.

And in my case, I'll just change it to a passwordone, passwordone.

And next, and you reload, we'll just let that finish.

Perfect and then we will click finish.

OK, and accept.

So this is our base interface, so we're going to be going over this in a little bit more detail in the next video.
