The two most popular certifications industry that are recognized widely in the Cyber Security industry are CISM (Certified Information Security Manager) and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional).
Certrifications are offered by independent nonprofits, ISACA (formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association) for CISM and (ISC)2 for CISSP. Certification exams focus on the most current knowledge provide deep, comprehensive training in understanding and responding to information security threats.
CISM is designed for information security managers, the certification emphasizes the relationship between information security and the business. It focused more on management and strategy, and only covers technical topics in a limited way.
CISSP certification, is suitable for a variety of positions, from security managers to consultants. The certification focuses on the operations side of information security and threat response, the tactical aspects of security operations and goes much deeper into those areas.
Once could say those professionals whose goal is to progress to a management level would look into CISM certification while than those who want to stay in a tactical role would look into CISSP certification. This is not to say the certifications are mutually exclusive, indeed many IT professionals start with CISSP to get a better technical understanding and then progress to CISM to get a more top-down managerial look on cyber security issues.
To pass the certificaiton exams you obviously need to have the knowledge, but it is much more than that.
You need to answer the questions from CISM/CISSP point of view, in their perfect world. Understand and answer every question from an IT Security Managers or a Risk Advisers point of view, NOT from an executive or as a techie. Most hands-on techies that fail the certification exam do so because they answer from a point of being reactive, not being proactive.
You need to be able to spot the keywords (PKI, policy, asymmetric, BCP) as well as the indicators (first, best, last, least, most).
The CISM exam has 4 Domains with different levels of focus:
- Domain 1: Information Security Governance - 24%
- Domain 2: Information Risk Management - 30%
- Domain 3: Information Security Program Development and Management - 27%
- Domain 4: Information Security Incident Management - 19%
The CISM exam is 4 hour long and will have 150 questions.
The CISSP exam has 8 Domains, that make up the CISSP CBK (Common Bodies of Knowledge):
- Security and Risk Management – 15%
- Asset Security – 10%
- Security Engineering – 13%
- Communications and Network Security – 14%
- Identity and Access Management (IAM) – 13%
- Security Assessment and Testing – 12%
- Security Operations – 13%
- Software Development Security – 10%
All questions will be multiple choice with either a single or multiple answers. You have 3 hours to answer the 100-150 questions.
Most people studying for the certification will use multiple books, video courses, and do a lot of practice questions before taking the exam, this really is the path to success. I would suggest 80%+ of right answers consistently on all CISM/CISSP domains using multiple practice tests before booking the exam.
